Facebook: How To Disable Facial Recognition

So Facebook have decided to enhance the social experience by providing facial recognition technology – but what does this mean exactly?

It means that when your photos are uploaded to Facebook (by you or any of your friends) facial recognition technology will identify other photos from Facebook which look like you, and suggest your name to friends for them to tag. Facebook will then notify you, so you can decide if you want to be tagged in someone else’s photos or not.

It might sound like a really nice feature to some people but for those who want to protect their privacy, it could be a terrifying thought. You should also know that Facial Recognition is ENABLED by default – NOW.

So, if you’re not comfortable with Facebook suggesting your name in photos to other people – this is how to DISABLE it:

  1. Log in to Facebook and in the top right hand corner of the screen, click on ACCOUNT
  2. Click on PRIVACY SETTINGS
  3. Click on CUSTOMISE SETTINGS

    Click on Customise Settings

  4. Move down to the heading THINGS OTHERS SHARE
  5. On the line that says SUGGEST PHOTOS OF ME click on EDIT SETTINGS

    Click on Edit Settings

  6. In the pop up window titled PHOTOS: SUGGEST TAGS the setting is set to ENABLED by default. Click on the arrow next to ENABLED, then click on DISABLED (which puts a tick next to it), then click on OK

    Click on Disabled, then OK

The settings will be saved and you can click on the HOME page to take you back to the front screen of Facebook.
